Ahhhh!! You guys, I have been waiting for SO long to reveal our houses to you and I can’t believe the day is FINALLY here!!! Yesterday was such an exhilarating day gathering together with our amazing team and loved ones to watch the premiere of Bargain Mansions! It was the moment we have ALL been working so hard towards for the past 7 months and we were all on cloud nine. Needless to say, it was definitely one of those “pinch me” moments that I will never forget. However, I will say… hearing myself talk on TV is NOT my favorite thing… but does anyone like the sound of their own voice?
Last night’s episode featured the Juniper House, an old French chateau with surprisingly decent bones to build on. I’ve had my eye on this house for years. It’s actually in my neighborhood, so I’ve driven by it more times than I can count. It’s not as old as some of the other mansions I’ve designed, but it has an old historic charm to it that I just fell in love with. As soon as it went up for sale, I JUMPED on it. A lot of the neighbors did too, but luckily, I snagged it! 😉
When we walked through the house, we quickly realized every inch would need to be touched. Not only was it in horrible condition from a structural and electrical standpoint, but it was COMPLETELY outdated. It was renovated back in the 80’s, so it was filled with hideous wallpaper, shaggy carpet, and a lot of light pink and aqua colors throughout… yikes. With that said, this house had some AMAZING historic elements that were to die for, which is what drew me to it in the first place. My goal through the entire process was the modernize the home and bring it up to current standards of an actual French Chateau!
The first floor of this house had a very traditional layout… very choppy with a lot of walls separating each room. My first priority was to completely open up the main floor by having my crew remove the wall between the kitchen and living room (I got to assist with this process. See above!) to create one large open area! My crew also closed up the outdated wet bar and turned it into an amazing walk-in pantry. (See what I mean about the aqua blue color… it HAD to go!)

For the mudroom, we wanted to create a space that was modern and trendy, but still timeless. We used fun and spunky Hygge & West wall paper, but balanced it out with a vintage dutch door that I’m completely obsessed with! We found this door at one of the antique stores in the West Bottoms area of Kansas City. If you’re local and haven’t been down there, you have to go! So many amazing finds for a great price.
The living room was probably my favorite room to tackle in this house because it was FILLED with so many historic elements! The half moon arches above the full-length french windows, the plantation shutters, the amazing marble fire place.. I wanted to keep it alllll! It just needed some major TLC to bring it all back to life. My crew replaced all the windows, refinished them and applied a fresh coats of paint to the shutters. We also lightened up the space by painting it a nice neutral color and replacing the floor with a gray wash finish for more of a European feel.
The space turned out better than we could have imagined. It’s spacious, bright, but still extremely cozy and warm. An added perk: the french doors actually open up to the amazing back patio – making this space an entertainer’s dream.
